Tim Macdonald Receives 2026 Outstanding Sustained Contribution Award

The Outstanding Sustained Contribution Award recognizes an individual whose longstanding dedication to the Colorado Lawyers Committee has profoundly advanced its mission and transformed the lives of Colorado's children, families, and underserved communities. This year's recipient, Timothy R. Macdonald, exemplifies the very best of our profession, a lawyer whose extraordinary commitment to justice has inspired colleagues, strengthened our organization, and expanded access to legal services for thousands of people over more than 25 years of service.

Throughout his distinguished career, Tim has paired exceptional legal talent with an unwavering belief that every person deserves access to justice. After graduating magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from the University of Michigan Law School, where he also earned a master's degree in public policy, Tim spent 24 years as a trial and appellate lawyer at Arnold & Porter before becoming Legal Director of the ACLU of Colorado in 2023.

Tim's impact on the Colorado Lawyers Committee is immeasurable. He was the visionary behind the legal component of Project Homeless Connect, launched in 2005 as part of the City of Denver's initiative to end homelessness. Under Tim's leadership, the Colorado Lawyers Committee mobilized hundreds of volunteer attorneys to provide legal guidance, referrals, and representation to individuals experiencing homelessness. Through legal clinics and Homeless Court, countless people were able to resolve legal barriers that stood in the way of securing housing, employment, and stability.

The following year, Tim founded Denver Legal Night, a monthly legal clinic created to ensure that individuals who could not afford an attorney still had access to trusted legal guidance. What began at Mi Casa Resource Center quickly expanded to Centro San Juan Diego in response to overwhelming community need. For a decade, Tim devoted an average of 250 volunteer hours each year to the program, leading with remarkable energy, compassion, and determination. Today, Denver Legal Night continues and has connected over 36,000 Coloradans with volunteer attorneys because of the strong foundation Tim built.

Tim's commitment to justice extends well beyond these signature initiatives. Over the past 25 years, he has generously shared his time and expertise across a wide range of Colorado Lawyers Committee projects, including the Immigration TRO, the Education Task Force, the Racial Justice Task Force, Jail Wait Litigation, the Amendment 23 lawsuit, the Immigration and Public Benefits Task Forces, and the Innocence Project. In each endeavor, Tim has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of vulnerable communities and advancing meaningful, systemic change.

As a member of the Colorado Lawyers Committee Board of Directors from 2008 to 2021, including service as Board Chair from 2014 to 2016, Tim provided thoughtful, steady leadership while always placing the organization's mission and the people it serves at the forefront. His influence can be measured not only by the programs he created and the cases he advanced, but by the countless lawyers he inspired to embrace pro bono service and use their talents to make a lasting difference.

The Colorado Lawyers Committee is honored to recognize Timothy R. Macdonald with the 2026 Outstanding Sustained Contribution Award. His legacy is one of vision, compassion, humility, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that justice is accessible to all.
