Diana Degette
May 5, 2022
U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) is an attorney and graduate of New York University School of Law, who is now serving in her thirteenth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Prior to serving in Congress, DeGette spent more than 15 years practicing law in Colorado, both as a trial and appellate attorney, where she focused primarily on civil rights, employment and criminal defense cases. As a fourth-generation Coloradan, DeGette began her legal career representing indigent clients as a public defender in the Colorado State Public Defender’s Appellate Division before entering private practice.
In 1992, DeGette was elected to the Colorado General Assembly where she spent two terms representing the people of Colorado’s 6th district. Four years later, in 1996, DeGette was elected to represent Colorado’s 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she continues to serve as the state’s most senior lawmaker.
While serving in the U.S. House, DeGette has become a leading voice in the nation’s ongoing health care debate. She currently serves as chair of the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations panel, which oversees some of our nation’s most important agencies - including the Department of Health and Human Services, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration. She’s also a member of the House Natural Resources Committee, where she’s helping to lead the fight to protect more of Colorado’s public lands and combat the ongoing climate crisis.
In December 2019, DeGette was asked by Speaker Pelosi to serve as Speaker Pro Tempore and preside over the House for President Trump’s first impeachment. In January 2021, DeGette was asked by Speaker Pelosi to serve as one of the nine House impeachment managers to present the case against President Trump to the Senate during his second impeachment trial.
